    A microsite is just like any normal website site except it is small, compact and optimized for one, specific and probably short-lived objective.

    Any website that has to represent a large organization will have a problem because it must contain so much information. The more content crammed behind the consistently branded menus, the more distracting a site becomes, with every button and link a temptation, teasing your audience away from your message and towards the HR department’s job listings instead.

    Just for an example, let’s look at Nokia – http://Nokia.com – who manufacture mobile phones (and other things). Their main site asks you which country you want before you even start. Once you get passed that, the site becomes an Aladdin’s cave of shopping carts, reviews, support, games, music, personal data and tonnes of other distracting stuff that make you forget why you came there in the first place.

    A microsite is different, it’s cut-back and only has one purpose. So, when Nokia wanted to promote their new phone, they used a microsite. Without the baggage of a full corporate website to carry, all efforts are focussed on the main objective: getting people excited about their product: http://nokiagameoverboredom.com/

    Removing the distractions is key to getting any message across. Making that message as memorable as possible is important if you want people to take it away with them.
